Practice makes perfect: ITNBluegrass offers test rides

Tuesday was independence day for Chandra Jarboe of Lexington. It marked the first time in about two years that she was able to go shopping all by herself. Forced to give up driving because of sight-robbing macular degeneration, she'd been relying on her husband, Joe, to drive her to the malls.

Non-profit transportation group moves closer to goal

Lexington and four neighboring counties are about $45,000 closer to getting a non-profit agency that would offer car rides to older and visually impaired people at prices less than what some existing transportation services charge.

But a total of $125,000 is needed to start up an Independent Transportation Network affiliate here, and that goal needs to be reached by early June, say those promoting the idea.

No, it's not the latest thing on cable. It's an ingenious approach to solving one of the dilemmas of aging. And it's based on the simplest of concepts: Giving each other a ride.

ITN would fill an immediate need in Lexington and four surrounding counties. It could also spark other ideas for helping the baby boomers age gracefully without breaking the public bank.

Program would transport seniors.

You're 85, don't drive anymore and are out of groceries. You're not able to walk to the bus stop down the street. A taxi is too expensive and your children live out of town.

Starting in March 2008, if you live in Lexington or one of four surrounding counties, you might not have to worry about how you're going to get to the store. That's because an Independent Transportation Network affiliate could be up and running by then.
